iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Duo: what Apple presented on September 9th
Apple yesterday, September 9th, unveiled the new generation of iPhone. This time it wasn't just another model: in addition to the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, the first foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo, arrived. We've gathered here what matters to those buying in Portugal — models, new features, official prices, and dates — without rumors or estimates. Everything below comes from Apple's pages; sources are at the end.
iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max
Both Pro models maintain their usual sizes: 6.3 inches for the iPhone 18 Pro and 6.9 inches for the Pro Max, both with a ProMotion display up to 120 Hz. Inside, the big change is the A20 Pro chip, Apple's first manufactured at 2 nanometers, with a 7-core GPU up to 40% faster than the A19 Pro's and a dual 16-core Neural Engine for artificial intelligence functions.
Camera with variable aperture
It's the most noticeable new feature in photos. The 48 MP Fusion main camera now has variable aperture (ƒ/1.48, ƒ/1.8, ƒ/2.8, and ƒ/4.0): the phone adjusts the aperture automatically according to the light and depth of field you want, and in manual mode, you can choose it yourself, like on a camera. The rear system remains the 48 MP Pro Fusion, with a 4x telephoto lens on both models and an additional 8x range on the Pro Max.
Battery: the biggest leap ever in an iPhone
- iPhone 18 Pro: up to 34 hours of video playback.
- iPhone 18 Pro Max: up to 43 hours of video playback.
- Fast charging: 50% in about 15 minutes with a compatible adapter. On the Pro Max, 5 minutes of charging provides about 7 hours of video.
Other changes
- Smaller Dynamic Island, capable of showing three live activities simultaneously.
- Unibody aluminum frame, Ceramic Shield 2 on the front (Apple claims three times more scratch resistance) and Ceramic Shield on the back.
- Colors: Black, Silver, Glacier, and Burgundy.
- Capacities: 256 GB, 512 GB, 1 TB, and 2 TB.
- Dual SIM with nano-SIM and eSIM (models sold in Europe retain the physical slot).
- iOS 27 arrives on September 14th as a free update, also for compatible older iPhones.
Prices in Portugal (Apple Store)
- iPhone 18 Pro: 1,499 € (256 GB), 1,749 € (512 GB), 2,249 € (1 TB), 2,999 € (2 TB).
- iPhone 18 Pro Max: 1,649 € (256 GB), 1,899 € (512 GB), 2,399 € (1 TB), 3,149 € (2 TB).
Pre-order from 1:00 PM on September 12th; available on September 18th.
iPhone Duo: the first foldable iPhone
It opens like a book. When closed, it has a 5.4-inch external display; when open, a 7.6-inch internal display with a nano-textured finish that reduces reflections — and, when open, it's the thinnest iPhone ever. The frame is made of grade 5 titanium, the hinge has over a hundred components, and the assembly is water and dust resistant (IP68).
- Chip: the same A20 Pro as the Pro models, with a vapor chamber to dissipate heat.
- Cameras: 48 MP Fusion main camera with 2x telephoto and 48 MP ultra-wide; 12 MP Center Stage front camera on the external display and a camera hidden under the internal display.
- Unlocking: Touch ID on the side button (no Face ID).
- Dual battery, one on each side: up to 31 hours of video on the internal display, up to 44 on the external; 50% in about 20 minutes with charging.
- Software: Split View, for two apps side-by-side, for the first time on an iPhone. Apple Pencil support arrives later this year.
- Colors: Starlight and Midnight. Capacities from 256 GB to 2 TB.
iPhone Duo prices and dates in Portugal
- 2,399 € (256 GB), 2,649 € (512 GB), 3,149 € (1 TB), 3,899 € (2 TB).
- Pre-order from 1:00 PM on October 16th; available on October 23rd. In other words, the Duo arrives more than a month after the Pro models.
And the rest of the event?
Apple also took the opportunity to refresh the AirPods (AirPods 5), the Apple Watch Series 12 — which debuts a ceramic finish — and the Apple Watch Ultra 4. According to ECO's coverage, the AirPods 5 cost 149 € (169 € with wireless charging case), the Series 12 starts at 459 € in aluminum, and the Ultra 4 at 909 €, all available on September 18th. There was no "regular" iPhone 18 or new iPhone Air at this event: last year's models remain on sale.
Is it worth upgrading?
If you have an iPhone 15 or earlier, the leap in battery, camera, and performance is significant and noticeable in daily use. If you have a 16 or 17 Pro, the variable aperture and the 43 hours of the Pro Max are the strongest arguments; the rest is evolution. The Duo is another story: it's a new product, with a price to match, and makes more sense for those who read, watch videos, or work a lot on their phone and want a tablet-sized screen in their pocket.
