The good news is that a dip doesn't necessarily mean the end of your device. However, the first few minutes are absolutely crucial. How you react can be the difference between a scare and needing a new phone. Take a deep breath, don't panic, and follow the steps we're about to give you. Acting quickly and, above all, with the right method, is your best weapon.

The 5 Immediate Steps to Save Your Phone

If your smartphone had an unwanted encounter with water, follow these steps religiously. Don't skip any and perform them in the indicated order.

1. Get it out of the water immediately

It seems obvious, but it's the most important step. Every second the phone spends submerged increases the likelihood of water infiltrating its internal components. Forget the dirt, forget everything else. Your only priority is to rescue it as quickly as possible.

2. Turn it off completely

This is the step most people ignore, on impulse. The temptation to check if it still works is enormous, but it's a fatal mistake. Water and electricity don't mix. Keeping the phone on, or turning it on to "check," can cause an immediate short circuit and fry the main board, making repair much more difficult or even impossible. If the screen is still on, turn it off immediately. If it has already turned off by itself, perfect. Do not try to turn it on again under any circumstances.

3. Remove everything possible

Now that the device is off and safe, disassemble what you can. Remove the protective case, the SIM card, and the memory card. If your phone is an older model with a removable battery, take that out too. The goal is to open as many ventilation paths as possible and ensure that moisture doesn't get trapped in slots or compartments.

4. Carefully dry the exterior

Use a soft, absorbent cloth, such as a microfiber cloth (ideally) or a cotton t-shirt, to carefully dry the entire surface of the phone. Do not use paper towels, as they can disintegrate and leave residue in charging ports or speakers. Gently tilt the phone so that water can drain from the ports, but avoid shaking it vigorously.

5. Let it air dry (with patience)

This is the test of your patience. Place the phone on a flat surface, in a dry and airy place. If you have silica gel packets (those that come in shoe boxes or electronic products), you can place them above and below the device. They are designed to absorb moisture. If you don't have any, simply leaving it in the open air (in the shade) or near a fan (with cold air) helps a lot. The most important thing is to wait. Let the phone dry for a minimum of 48 to 72 hours. Yes, you read that right. Two to three days. Only after this period should you try to turn it on.

Myths and Fatal Mistakes: What You Should NEVER Do

As important as knowing what to do is knowing what to avoid. There are many "popular tips" that can actually cause more damage.

The rice myth

It's perhaps the most famous myth, but also one of the most harmful. The idea is that raw rice absorbs moisture. Although it has minimal absorption power, rice has two major problems: dust and starch. Fine rice particles can easily enter the charging port, headphone jack, and speakers, creating a paste when in contact with water. This paste can solidify and cause connection problems or damage components. Furthermore, its absorption capacity is much lower than simple air drying. Forget the rice.

Do not use heat sources

Never, under any circumstances, use a hairdryer (even on cold mode, as the force of the air can push water further inside), a heater, an oven, or a microwave to try to speed up the process. Leaving it in direct sunlight is also a terrible idea. Excessive heat can permanently damage delicate electronic components, melt solder, deform the chassis, and damage the battery and screen.

Do not shake it or use compressed air

The instinct might be to shake the phone to "expel" the water. Don't do it. By shaking it, you are only helping the water travel deeper inside the device, reaching areas that might have been dry. The same applies to compressed air, which pushes water droplets into critical components with great force.

Do not try to turn it on or charge it

It's worth repeating: patience is your best friend. Turning on the phone before it's completely dry is a recipe for disaster. Trying to charge it is even worse, as it introduces an electrical current into an environment that may still be damp. Wait the recommended 48-72 hours. It's your best chance.

What if, even then, it doesn't work?

You followed all the steps, waited patiently, and after three days, your phone doesn't turn on or exhibits strange behavior (screen spots, distorted speakers, etc.).
